How do kids learn, if you don't teach them?

We do teach them. Teaching does not have to take place in a traditional classroom, with an adult in the front. We do offer classes that resemble that traditional model, but we teach in many other ways as well. We teach by asking questions, listening, posing challenges, acting as role models, and supporting students in their endeavors. Children also have many opportunities to learn, not from listening to someone speak, reading a textbook, or watching a video, but through experiencing things in the world.

Is Your School Academically Rigorous?

We addressed this question in our blog post here.

How will I know that my child is making progress?

We will help your child to set personal goals and monitor his own progress. You may be able to see his progress in the form of a journal, an art gallery, a podcast, or a presentation he does in front of his peers. If your student is interested in keeping track of his progress through assessments (for instance, if he wants to keep track of how many multiplication facts he's memorized or how many words he can read) we can help him do that. Just as there are many ways to learn, there are many ways to view progress. Several times per year, we will invite parents and guardians to meet with their child and the staff members, to share how we all think the student is doing.

Are students allowed to just do whatever they want?

Not exactly. They are allowed to pursue their own interests, and they are allowed to listen to their bodies and give themselves time to relax. They are allowed to decide what they will and will not participate in, and what goals they will set for themselves. However, as part of a community, they will be expected to treat others with kindness and respect, participate in our daily routines, and clean up after themselves.

Is Someday School similar to a Montessori School?

There are some similarities. However, in a Montessori School, choices are limited to what the teachers provide. Montessori Schools also follow a specific structure that dictates their furniture, vocabulary, curriculum, etc. At Someday School, choices are only limited to what is safe and logistically possible.

Are you an accredited private school?

Not quite yet. Accredidation takes years to achieve. For example, The Northwest Association of Independent Schools has an accredidation process that takes eight years. WE ARE AN APPROVED PRIVATE SCHOOL IN THE STATE OF WASHINGTON!

Are you a year-around school?
No, we will be off for holidays seasonal breaks. In addition, if families want to take time off during the school year for travel or other experiences, we allow and encourage it. A lot of learning can take place during unforgettable experiences such as these.

Where are you located?

We are located on the second floor of Saint Anne's Episcopal Church in Washougal.
